Cross Country Trip (Day 3), Part 1 West Glacier N.P.

Lake McDonald Glacier National Park June 2016

Glacier National Park is huge.  Lake McDonald is just a small part of it but also a focal point and a favorite spots for tourists that stay in the cabins and the lodge there.
It also merges with Waterton Lakes National Park of Canada to the north.. of course.
And you can essentially split the park east and west across the Continental Divide.  Because of this I'm going to break up the Day 3 blog into several parts.

I've been to Glacier N.P. several times.  The last time was in May of 2008 and I could only get this far because the road beyond was still covered in snow.
In my first visit to the park the Going To The Sun Road was undergoing a lot of maintenance but was open. The Red Ford busses were running and I was able to make the journey all the way to the east side of the park.   This was in the later part of July 2004.

But this is not about those older trips to the park, it's about this past summer of 2016 and the "happy accidents" Bob Ross always mentioned in his painting shows on public TV.

My plan was to spend some time at the Lake McDonald Lodge and grab some photos and relax a bit prior to heading up the Going To The Sun Road which is kind of why most people come this far.  The Lodge is very nice and well maintained with lots of beautiful flowers and an incredible interior.

Lake McDonald Lodge June 2016

Snyder Creek flows right along side of the lodge and I thought it would be fun to get a long exposure of the water flowing around the rocks... but I didn't bring my tripod which is pretty much a necessity for sharp photos with long exposure times.
So I climbed on down to creek level and set up the camera on a rock flat enough to keep it steady and pressed down on the camera and then tripped the shutter and came up with a few good shots, this is one example.

Those famous Red Ford Busses were oddly parked and not running for some reason.. well there was a reason.. more on that later.

Below the lodge is a boat dock which provides a nice view of the north half of the lake and the Heavens Peak mountain range.

Running alongside the Going To The Sun road is McDonald "creek".  The maps don't describe the lower section as the McDonald Creek but that is the main tributary to the north and as it gets closer to the lake it becomes a raging river and less a creek.
I took a lot of photos along the river and around the falls, bridges and overlooks.  Some were long exposures on a tripod this time.
